Our publication criteria are based upon high ethical standards and rigorous scientific methodology (http://publicationethics.org/files/Code%20of%20Conduct_2.pdf). Authors are welcomed to submit original articles, review articles (systematic and metaanalysis), brief communications, special communications, and letters for consideration of the MJMS editorial board.


All submission will undergo rigorous quality and statistical checks (http://journal.usm.my/journal/01MJMS23052016_ED2.pdf) and peer-review evaluation process before a final decision (http://journal.usm.my/journal/mjms-22-6-001.pdf). At the moment, the acceptance rate is 38% (2015).

Types of Manuscript


Editorials (E)
Brief, substantiated commentary on subjects of topical interest.


Original Article (OA)
Report of original clinical or investigative laboratory research.


Review Article (R)
Overview of recent researches in a particular subject area.

Brief Communications (BC)
Description of a complete small investigation; or of new models, hypotheses, or innovative methods.
Special communications (SC)
Article on an important issue in clinical medicine, public health, health policy, or biomedical research.
Case Report (CR)
Brief case report of unusual interest.
Letter to the Editor (LE)
Comment(s) on a manuscript published within 6 months in MJMS; or a short letter on scientifically relevant findings.
Letters in reply (LR)
Reply by authors.
  Manuscript Preparation  
  Manuscripts must be written in the English language and prepared in Microsoft Word document (.doc), preferably using Times New Roman, size 12, with double spacing and normal margin. Authors may refer to Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, or other similar publications, for tips on preparing a scientific manuscript.  
  The following materials should be provided in separate files:  

Title page
The title page should contain full title, a running title of not more than 50 characters, names of authors and affiliations, corresponding authorís details, and acknowledgements (if any).


Main document

The title should be concise but informative.

The abstract should briefly summarise all important aspects of the manuscript in 150 to 250 words.

Please use MeSH terms (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html) for keywords.

The text of observational and experimental articles is usually divided into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. A case report is divided into Introduction, Case Report, and Discussion. Other types of manuscript may be divided into several sections, as seen necessary by the authors.

Please follow CSE citation style for references.


Tables (if any)
Tables should be prepared to fit a portrait layout. Please keep the tables as simple as possible; further explanations can be included in the footnotes.

Figures (if any)
Figures should be of high quality, either in EPS or TIFF format. Original file (e.g., Excel, SPSS output file) should also be provided for graphs and charts.
The Authorship Agreement Form should be completed and submitted via mail, fax, or email. For manuscripts containing pictures of identifiable patients, the Patient Consent Form must be submitted as well.
  Manuscript Submission  
  Manuscript should be submitted online via ScholarOne Manuscript (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/maljms). For a first-time contributor, please register a new account. Click here to download the ScholarOne Manuscripts Author Guide.  
  A new submission will be pre-screened (content check and plagiarism check) prior to peer review process. A decision letter will be sent to the authors once all reviews have been returned. Authors can track the manuscriptís progress through the Author Center.  
  Accepted manuscripts become the permanent property of the Universiti Sains Malaysia Press and may not be published elsewhere without prior permission from the publisher; all authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Form upon acceptance of the manuscript. Permission must be obtained from copyright owner to reproduce materials published elsewhere in the manuscript.  
  Hardcopy Request  
  Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences only provides published manuscript in PDF form, which is freely available online. Author can request for a hardcopy of the full issue by contacting the Journal Division, Universiti Sains Malaysia Press by telephone at +604-653 4423, by fax at +604-657 5714, or by email at journal@usm.my. Each copy will be charged at MYR 30 (within Malaysia) and USD 30 (international).
